Miami Homicide & The BAU Collaborate – On The Count Of Three by Carolyn Arnold @Carolyn_Arnold

On the Count of Three (Brandon Fisher FBI #7) - Carolyn Arnold

Carolyn Arnold is one of the best procedural novelists I have ever rad, so I was super excited to read On The Count of Three, the seventh novel in the Brandon Fisher FBI series.

Publisher:  Hibbert & Stiles Publishing

On the Count of Three (Brandon Fisher FBI #7)

Amazon  /  Goodreads

MY REVIEW

Carolyn Arnold’s attention to detail makes her writing so engrossing, riveting, that once I start, I am unable to stop reading until the last page is read.

When the Night called to him, he felt the need to find one who is worthy of his attention. I don’t want him focusing on me. He counts down, preparing to wreak havoc on his victim, “One, Two….saved by the bell, the ringing telephone.

Brandon, a special agent with the BAU woke to the ringing phone. His girlfriend Becky is a police officer so she knows the drill. Jack, Brandon, Zack and Paige are a team. But for how long?

I always wonder how long a person can last in such a stressful position as the BAU? When is it time to walk away? Do they all become jaded over time? Inured to the evil they deal with?

I wonder how and why the villain chose his gruesome method of murder. Serial killers have a reason for what they do, even if no one else can understand it.

I am looking forward to watching Brandon’s growth from a rookie to a seasoned agent. It takes time and training and I am a patient person.

I feel the agents pain as they arrive…just a little too late. It’s not all glamour, save the day action. The investigation is thorough and we go through it step by step, watching and learning. The tedium of questioning and more questioning and research. Criminal Minds is an awesome TV show that I watch religiously, but it cannot begin to cover…in realistic terms…what Carolyn Arnold covers in her novels.

We are all byproducts of our experiences. It’s what each person chooses to do with those experiences that comes to define them.

On The Count Of Three by Carolyn Arnold ends in hope and eagerness to see tomorrow and the next day…

She writes some of the best procedural novels I have ever read

One Sentence Review – The City by Dean Koontz @deankoontz

The City - Dean Koontz

I have been a huge fan of Dean Koontz for years, so when I saw this for review, I had to grab it. Then…I wished I hadn’t.

The City (The City, #1)

Amazon  /  Audiobook  /  Goodreads

MY REVIEW

Well, what can I say…I never even read the blurb because…it’s Dean Koontz…and I was so disappointed to be denied my dose of horror that I was expecting, though I did finish it and gave it a 2 star rating for that reason, I could never get past my expectations and I know I will be reading blurbs from here on out.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of The City by Dean Koontz.

Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos 2 Stars

GOODREADS BLURB

The city changed my life and showed me that the world is deeply mysterious. I need to tell you about her and some terrible things and wonderful things and amazing things that happened . . . and how I am still haunted by them. Including one night when I died and woke and lived again.

Here is the riveting, soul-stirring story of Jonah Kirk, son of an exceptional singer, grandson of a formidable “piano man,” a musical prodigy beginning to explore his own gifts when he crosses a group of extremely dangerous people, with shattering consequences. Set in a more innocent time not so long ago, The City encompasses a lifetime but unfolds over three extraordinary, heart-racing years of tribulation and triumph, in which Jonah first grasps the electrifying power of music and art, of enduring friendship, of everyday heroes.

The unforgettable saga of a young man coming of age within a remarkable family, and a shimmering portrait of the world that shaped him, The City is a novel that speaks to everyone, a dazzling realization of the evergreen dreams we all share. Brilliantly illumined by magic dark and light, it’s a place where enchantment and malice entwine, courage and honor are found in the most unexpected quarters, and the way forward lies buried deep inside the heart.

Monday Mini Review – Sleeping Beauties by Stephen & Owen King #StephenKing #OwenKing

Sleeping Beauties: A Novel - Stephen King, Owen King

Pretty cool cover for Sleeping Beauties by Stephen & Owen King.

Publisher:  Simon & Schuster

Sleeping Beauties

Amazon  /  Audible  /  Goodreads

MY REVIEW

Sleeping Beauties is a collaboration between Stephen & Owen King, so I don’t expect it to be a Stephen King ‘original’. That being said, I did enjoy the story, but was left wondering if Stephen has lost his mojo or is in semi retirement. I hope not, because I have read a vast majority of his work and would love to have more of the old stuff. What gripped me most about the book, is the importance of the women. Hey guys, take a listen here. BUT, women without men, or vice versa, is not a workable solution to any problem. This fantasy exposes human failings, sharing their hopelessness, sadness, anger and rage, good and bad, and every emotion you can imagine. In the end, we do the best we can. There are plenty of characters for you to love and hate, but be careful, your favorite may not survive.

Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos 4 Stars

GOODREADS BLURB

In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep; they become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze.

If they are awakened, and the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place.

The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease.

Is Evie a medical anomaly to be studied, or is she a demon who must be slain?

Mackinac Island & Murder – Tandem Demise by Duffy Brown #DuffyBrown @dollycas

Tandem Demise - Duffy Brown

Paperback: 298 pages
ISBN-10: 1729374786
ISBN-13: 978-1729374788

MY REVIEW

Duffy Brown in Tandem Demise takes us to real places and lets us meet some real people, soooo, if you have ever been to Mackinac Island, you will feel right at home, except for the dead guy.

I love these quirky characters and the mystery to die for.

Especially Eve. She is a real hoot. She fits the definition of a cozy character to a tee. A fumbling, amateur detective, a bit nosy and known for it by all. No place is safe from her prying eyes. She sees dead people. She believes she lives under a black cloud. Does it put her in danger? Of course.

The humorous, snappy dialogue kept the action moving and the entertainment at a high level with laugh out loud moments.

MY REVIEW

I live in Florida but am originally from Michigan, so I feel right at home…in Detroit. At least, that is where Scott starts from. Familiar territory makes me settle right in.

Scott shows early on what an asshole he is. The more I read, the less I liked him. He’s rude, arrogant, and just plain mean. But, he’s driving a red hot Charger. Mick Ridgewell does a fabulous job of describing how it looks and sounds. I can hear it. I love the sound of the old sports cars, the deep growling rumble of the engine.

Roger was hitchhiking from Vermont to the Grand Canyon, enjoying stopping here and there along the way.

As I read of Roger’s nightmare, I can see him and Scott must be on a collision course and it won’t have a happy ending. I am worried about Roger. If his nightmare comes true…well, I don’t want that for him.

When Mick describes the nightcrawlers, their slimy trails on the blacktop like roads on a map, it brought back childhood memories of hunting for them at night as a kid. Then, we would take them to the bait shop up the street and sell them. I love when books have that something extra that I can relate to when reading.

The story is told from two points of view, Scott’s and Roger’s. As we travel to their ultimate destination…we have some fun, meet some people, cross some hurdles, but if you hear anyone say Okie Dokie…RUN!

The smell of the bum is everywhere, haunting Scott.

The red eyed dog lurks in the shadows.

Always the raven watches.

I now see the connection, why both men are being haunted by the past and why the raven is keeping tabs on everyone. There is an aura of menace that permeates the pages. I know something’s going to happen, I just don’t know what or when and I am a bit worried. You see, I have come to like Roger and Beth…a lot…and I would like them to have a future once the trip is over.

Fate, Karma, ghosts. You can run, but you can’t hide.

If you like a story with slow building suspense, where the supernatural steps in to haunt your every step and the past comes back to haunt you, where your karma catches up to you and the price you must pay for the wrongs you committed will not be denied,  then Nightcrawlers is for you.

Monday Mini Review – Born A Crime by Trevor Noah @Trevornoah

Born a Crime - Trevor Noah

Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood

Amazon  /  Goodreads

MY REVIEW

Trevor Noah is a prime example that how you grow up is no excuse. He shows that you can be whatever you want to be. He is livingthe American Dream after growing up in Africa during Apartheid.

I couldn’t help but laugh at his childhood antics. I love that nothing crushed his personality, his ability to make fun of life. Him and his mother are an amazing pair. Their life was rich in love and experience.

“We had a very Tom and Jerry relationship, me and my mom. She was the strict disciplinarian, I was naughty as shit.”

His mom, Gotta love her. They laughed in the face of death. His mother is an amazing woman. Strong, stubborn, confident, determined. I love how she ‘worked the system and if you read these essays you will wonder if you could do the same.

I laughed with them, I was angry for them and I deeply respect their ability to rise above the horror they lived in.

You don’t want to miss these fabulous essays.

Nuclear War & Space Pirates – The Heights of Perdition by C S Johnson @C_S_Johnson13

The Heights of Perdition: A Science Fiction Romance Series (The Divine Space Pirates Book 1) - C. S. Johnson, Jennifer Sell

The Heights of Perdition (The Divine Space Pirates, #1)

Amazon  /  Goodreads

MY REVIEW

C S Johnson has created a world that was destroyed by a nuclear holocaust and it is easy to picture the devastation and the struggle of the people to survive.

The Heights of Perdition takes us from the Earth to Outer Space and back again.

It was easy to figure out where the story was going but I thoroughly enjoyed the journey.

The people of New Hope, which is formerly New York City, live underground. That alone is enough to creep me out. Above ground is desolate and barren. I do love that C S has saved one giant tree and Aeris sneaks out to spend time in it. She has an independent streak, so when it comes time for her to graduate and join the Military Academy, her lifelong dream, her father nixes that idea. She is crushed, but I too, think she is better suited doing something else. She has a green thumb and they are in dire need of someone with her skills.

I can’t imagine the life of the people Serious. No laughs. No fun. The leaders say jump, the people say, how hi. No free thinking allowed.

Exton Shepherd hijacked the Perdition because he felt he had no choice. It was his father’s invention and he was not about to let anyone misuse it. Him and his crew lived on the spaceship, but they still had to return to Earth for water. Their lives are full of all the things that make us human. All the emotions that entails. And theyare allowed to show them.

When the two come together, we know what’s going to happen. But, for me, that’s okay. Just because I know how the story goes, doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy it. And I did.

All the things that make us human are exposed, the good and bad, the misuse of power, the demand to be obeyed, greed, and love and laughter.

The Heights of Perdition by C S Johnson is thought provoking and frightening. What would the world be like after nuclear war? C S Johnson gives us a glimpse of some possibilities. I would love to read more.

The only thing I hated was the cliffhanger…but the trilogy is complete and even comes in a boxed set. So…grab your copy now if you love science fiction or world ending stories.

All Good Things (Ethan Tennant Series)

Amazon  /  Goodreads

MY REVIEW

Perry Prete takes his real life work and twists it into fiction novels, giving his books the feel of being a true story.

I love Tom, Ethan’s hunky sweet partner. Does his job the way you wish everyone would. Tom is one special guy and, if I ever need an ambulance, I hope he shows up. He is a gentle caring, patient man.

It started out a normal day at work, but not when we reached apartment 318. He, literally, stepped in it. He noticed something odd…it looked like an upside down cross brushed on the victim’s forehead. He felt the need to follow up on the call. He couldn’t let it go.

An upside down cross has many meanings, one of which is a public execution.

He found there was more than one curious death.

His bud, Galen, is the lead on the murder case. They are close friends, playing off each other. Galen is sort of a red headed British overweight Columbo. What a fabulous description is that. Makes it very easy to picture him, and we do see a lot of him.

The humor is understandable. Like anyone in a high stress job, humor helps people get through the bad. The urinal scene had me cracking up. Boys will be boys.

He was having fun with the killings, smiling while watching the police at the crime scene. The killing had now become sexual for him. He got off on it. He gets sicker with each passing moment. He had become…

He calls Ethan and the game is on. Why is he being singled out by the killer?

I got a bit of a rush from that ambulance ride.

Did you know that firefighters are water fairies? LOL

Oh man, there is so much sadness. The deaths become more gruesome as he comes into his own. And this may so sick, but I am enjoying it more. The darker, the more evil the villain becomes, the more I love him.

The pacing kept the suspense on an even keel, always there, endangering the characters. The more I get to know the characters, the more I like them, even the evil villain. I think Tom is my favorite though.

This is Perry Prete’s first novel and it was a great one. Very well done. I loved it. Some great characters, plenty of murder and mayhem, loss and love, danger and evil. I am not sure what’s missing. why am i not blown away, because it has all the thing I love…could it be romance? Of course, this is a series, so maybe he’s saving that. You know, a slow burn instead of a hot flash.

I look forward to reading more of his work, watching him grow as an author, creating more mystery and suspense, because…there is one question not answered. The story could end here, or, it could come to life in the next book.

MY REVIEW

Lauren Carr is one of my go to authors when I want a mystery that’s just right. Not too cozy and not too dark, but filled with suspense, humor and a critter or two or three…

I love being back with familiar friends and the pets who love them. Lauren Carr;s characters, both human and canine, are rich in personality and she gets right to the action. the hook is set early and I love that, even though I know when I open the cover I am in for hours of entertainment, laughter, danger and worry.

Right off the bat I greet Newman. He’s a Basset mix and a couch potato, who pouts when he doesn’t like what’s on TV and doesn’t have the remote to change it. Sometimes it’s the stock report and sometimes it could be a movie, like Jurassic Park or zombies. He has good taste.

“You have a couch potato who pranks people by playing possum and another who’s a compulsive liar..”

A great description for the critters in this household. Gotta love ’em!

Jessica and Murphy are still in the honeymoon phase of their marriage, but, like a lot of us, they are busy with the necessities of life and don’t have enough time to spend together. Adds that bit of realism that makes the story read like true crime.

Technology plays a big part in this series and I would love to have a butler like Nigel and all the toys that are available to them.

We have secrets, murders, Phantoms, and more…

In fact, we have multiple murders and a long list of suspects. But don’t worry, we still have plenty of time for some laughter and lovin’.

Thanks Lauren, for another chance to get lost in a twist and turn mystery that leads me down one path, only to find I took a wrong turn somewhere. Keep ’em coming.

MY REVIEW

First, I would grab this book because it was written by Carolyn Arnold. Second, I have been reading her work for a while now, and I now she won’t disappoint my, but she may blow my mind. Third, SHE DID!

Carolyn Arnold’s novels read like Criminal Minds episodes. I love how she breaks down the crimes and the criminals, taking us through the process, step by step, clue by clue. And this is one mystery that keeps on giving. I was super creeped out early and it never stopped. I wonder where Carolyn came up with the idea for Eleven. Is she smoking something?

Salt Lick. Kentucky. Underground. Creepaliciously gruesome and I feel chills running up and down my spine just writing this.

Eleven, the symbol of purity, but I sure don’t see it here.

Focus, analyze, and be objective is what is required and Brandon is thankful for the training that allowed him to do exactly that, especially in the current circumstances. This is Brandon’s first case with the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI. His coworkers ride him, calling him Kid, Pending and Slingshot.

We watch Brandon grow and learn as he works under Jack, a Supervisory Special Agent. Danger strikes too close for comfort, but he slowly learns to keep control of his emotions, or he would be useless to the investigation. His first case, and it is a horrific one.

WOW…I am only at 28% and the story is so intense, I wonder how I will make it to the end. Do I cheat and peak? NO! Don’t do it. It would ruin everything. It is the anticipation, the awful, sickening journey that makes it all worthwhile. I will savor the threats and danger. I will crawl around underground with them…there go those shivers again.

There is so much more of the story to come, I can’t imagine what surprises are in store for me, but Carolyn’s ability to write with suspense and make her characters seem so real that at times I forget this isn’t a true story, is one journey I know I won’t regret..

The killer they are looking for is just out of reach. They will get there, but will it be in time? There is more than one life at stake.

Stories and scenes that happen underground really freak me out. I shivered and cringed my way to the end and loved every minute of it! If you love mystery, thrills and suspense of the highest caliber, this is a must read and Carolyn Arnold is an author you want to follow. I anticipate many more horrific stories to come. Bring it on, Carolyn!

“You have one great weakness.”

“You’re too positive.”

“You think we catch all the bad guys, that we can stop the evil in the world.”

“You believe in hope even when there is none.”

MY REVIEW

No End of Bad by Ginny Fite started out with me thinking this will just be so so. It didn’t take long for me to become involved and wondering what would I do if I were sitting in a park, minding my own business, nothing new, just the usual work day and I see some litter, so I pick it up. Before I can say, excuse me, I am jumped on, handcuffed and off to who knows where we go.

Innocent until proven guilty? Yeah, right.

Accused of being a spy Clayton Turnbull’s life is over as he knows it. But it gets oh so much worse.

There are so many awful characters, no morals or scruples, a what’s in it for me attitude, and corruption and greed run rampant. These characters don’t even deserve to be put in jail, they deserve to be buried under it. There is no level they will not go to keep what’s theirs and cover up the evidence before that pesky reporter, or someone else, exposes them.

As will Lenore Cavanaugh, the reporter that is like a pit full. She will not let anything go.

Margaret and Melissa Turnbull will rise above and beyond anything they could have dreamed about.

I love a good conspiracy mystery and this is one convoluted tale that goes around the world and back again. Politics and greed rear their ugly heads and run full bore after those who threaten to expose them.

I like a book that makes me question things in the real world. I do wonder what percentage of people in the world today believe everything they read in the papers, see on TV and on the internet. Do they get their news from Facebook?

Well…loaded with danger, corruption, government rogues running wild around the world, these amazing characters will rise to levels never anticipated to do the right thing, to protect their own and to take down the bad guys, no matter who they are or how high they rise. And it doesn’t stop until the last page is read. Warning: the ending may require tissues.

I love this quote from Henry Kissinger:

Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean someone isn’t trying to kill you.

Here’s a quote from Melissa to her mother, Margaret:

“God Mom, there’s just No End of Bad.”
