MY REVIEW

Lauren Carr is one of my go to authors when I want a mystery that’s just right. Not too cozy and not too dark, but filled with suspense, humor and a critter or two or three…

I love being back with familiar friends and the pets who love them. Lauren Carr;s characters, both human and canine, are rich in personality and she gets right to the action. the hook is set early and I love that, even though I know when I open the cover I am in for hours of entertainment, laughter, danger and worry.

Right off the bat I greet Newman. He’s a Basset mix and a couch potato, who pouts when he doesn’t like what’s on TV and doesn’t have the remote to change it. Sometimes it’s the stock report and sometimes it could be a movie, like Jurassic Park or zombies. He has good taste.

“You have a couch potato who pranks people by playing possum and another who’s a compulsive liar..”

A great description for the critters in this household. Gotta love ’em!

Jessica and Murphy are still in the honeymoon phase of their marriage, but, like a lot of us, they are busy with the necessities of life and don’t have enough time to spend together. Adds that bit of realism that makes the story read like true crime.

Technology plays a big part in this series and I would love to have a butler like Nigel and all the toys that are available to them.

We have secrets, murders, Phantoms, and more…

In fact, we have multiple murders and a long list of suspects. But don’t worry, we still have plenty of time for some laughter and lovin’.

Thanks Lauren, for another chance to get lost in a twist and turn mystery that leads me down one path, only to find I took a wrong turn somewhere. Keep ’em coming.

Going Underground in Eleven by Carolyn Arnold @Carolyn_Arnold

Eleven - Carolyn Arnold

Carolyn Arnold is a prolific writer and I have been reading her work for a while now. Her thrillers are to die for and I am excited when I have another one of her books in my hand.

Eleven was FREE at the time of posting and if you are a thriller lover, this is a must read.

Publisher:  Hibbert & Stiles Publishing

Eleven (Brandon Fisher FBI series, #1)

Amazon  /  Goodreads

MY REVIEW

First, I would grab this book because it was written by Carolyn Arnold. Second, I have been reading her work for a while now, and I now she won’t disappoint my, but she may blow my mind. Third, SHE DID!

Carolyn Arnold’s novels read like Criminal Minds episodes. I love how she breaks down the crimes and the criminals, taking us through the process, step by step, clue by clue. And this is one mystery that keeps on giving. I was super creeped out early and it never stopped. I wonder where Carolyn came up with the idea for Eleven. Is she smoking something?

Salt Lick. Kentucky. Underground. Creepaliciously gruesome and I feel chills running up and down my spine just writing this.

Eleven, the symbol of purity, but I sure don’t see it here.

Focus, analyze, and be objective is what is required and Brandon is thankful for the training that allowed him to do exactly that, especially in the current circumstances. This is Brandon’s first case with the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI. His coworkers ride him, calling him Kid, Pending and Slingshot.

We watch Brandon grow and learn as he works under Jack, a Supervisory Special Agent. Danger strikes too close for comfort, but he slowly learns to keep control of his emotions, or he would be useless to the investigation. His first case, and it is a horrific one.

WOW…I am only at 28% and the story is so intense, I wonder how I will make it to the end. Do I cheat and peak? NO! Don’t do it. It would ruin everything. It is the anticipation, the awful, sickening journey that makes it all worthwhile. I will savor the threats and danger. I will crawl around underground with them…there go those shivers again.

There is so much more of the story to come, I can’t imagine what surprises are in store for me, but Carolyn’s ability to write with suspense and make her characters seem so real that at times I forget this isn’t a true story, is one journey I know I won’t regret..

The killer they are looking for is just out of reach. They will get there, but will it be in time? There is more than one life at stake.

Stories and scenes that happen underground really freak me out. I shivered and cringed my way to the end and loved every minute of it! If you love mystery, thrills and suspense of the highest caliber, this is a must read and Carolyn Arnold is an author you want to follow. I anticipate many more horrific stories to come. Bring it on, Carolyn!

“You have one great weakness.”

“You’re too positive.”

“You think we catch all the bad guys, that we can stop the evil in the world.”

“You believe in hope even when there is none.”

Content Rating: PG-13 (Contains cursing, violence, non-explicit sex but NO adultery, abortion, etc.)

MY REVIEW

No End of Bad by Ginny Fite started out with me thinking this will just be so so. It didn’t take long for me to become involved and wondering what would I do if I were sitting in a park, minding my own business, nothing new, just the usual work day and I see some litter, so I pick it up. Before I can say, excuse me, I am jumped on, handcuffed and off to who knows where we go.

Innocent until proven guilty? Yeah, right.

Accused of being a spy Clayton Turnbull’s life is over as he knows it. But it gets oh so much worse.

There are so many awful characters, no morals or scruples, a what’s in it for me attitude, and corruption and greed run rampant. These characters don’t even deserve to be put in jail, they deserve to be buried under it. There is no level they will not go to keep what’s theirs and cover up the evidence before that pesky reporter, or someone else, exposes them.

As will Lenore Cavanaugh, the reporter that is like a pit full. She will not let anything go.

Margaret and Melissa Turnbull will rise above and beyond anything they could have dreamed about.

I love a good conspiracy mystery and this is one convoluted tale that goes around the world and back again. Politics and greed rear their ugly heads and run full bore after those who threaten to expose them.

I like a book that makes me question things in the real world. I do wonder what percentage of people in the world today believe everything they read in the papers, see on TV and on the internet. Do they get their news from Facebook?

Well…loaded with danger, corruption, government rogues running wild around the world, these amazing characters will rise to levels never anticipated to do the right thing, to protect their own and to take down the bad guys, no matter who they are or how high they rise. And it doesn’t stop until the last page is read. Warning: the ending may require tissues.

I love this quote from Henry Kissinger:

Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean someone isn’t trying to kill you.

Here’s a quote from Melissa to her mother, Margaret:

“God Mom, there’s just No End of Bad.”

The Austin Paradox by Willaim R Leibowitz @MiracleManBook @iReadBookTours

The Austin Paradox - William Leibowitz

MY REVIEW

I LOVED Miracle Man, Book I, so I was very eager to begin The Austin Paradox, Book II, and I did, immediately. It’s a story of a superhero, but not one endowed with magical powers. He has a mind, a level of genius, never seen before.

This is where we find Robert James Austin’s mindset as we embark on a mission to save more lives.

There is a force of negativity and destruction in the universe. Highly efficient and infinitely resourceful, it empowers and leads. It gives diseases their resiliency, their tenacity, their propensity to reinvent themselves, resist treatments, regenerate and defensively mutate. It propels them.

Christine, his wife, just wants a normal life, and now she has it…or does she?

William R Leibowitz’s novels have a ring of truth to them, when dealing with Big Pharma and the government. So much of what he writes makes me angry, disgusted, and feeling helpless to do anything about it. I love when an author’s writing brings forth emotions that, at times, seem to overwhelm me. And if these books don’t open your eyes and scare the crap out of you, I don’t know what will.

I have dealt with the affects of the ‘don’t cure the disease, just treat the symptoms’, mentality of those who want more, more money, more control, more….How about you?

The main story, though, is about Robert James Austin and his desire to right the wrongs, all while fighting his personal demons. Robert believes that things should change and wants to help do it, by finding cures and making them accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford it. Man, oh man, if only his cures were real.

The Austin Pardox is different from The Miracle Man, but we are still learning about his genius, or now, it is his lack of it. His life is still in danger from himself, but also from outside forces who want him gone. The book may be different, but it is still just as intense.

A biological weapon, an apocalyptic Islamic caliphate…I wonder how everything will come together. I fear for the entire planet.

I know this is fiction, but I feel it could become all too real. Can we look at William R Leibowitz’s series as a warning?  Think about it. Who decides who lives and who dies? Who do you trust? The Austin Paradox left me hopeful and pissed off for The Miracle Man.

I didn’t rate this as high as The Miracle Man. It was a bit different, but I wonder, was it my mood? Did I get dogged down in the details? I wonder if, after reading The Miracle Man, I found The Austin Paradox more predictable. I don’t know, but I find the series to be a special series, and I would highly recommend it to everyone!

Greatest Genius In Human History – The Miracle Man by Willaim R Leibowitz @MiracleManBook @iR

Miracle Man - William Leibowitz
Hi and welcome to my first of two posts for the Miracle Man series. Today I will be sharing Miracle Man and Thursday, the 13th, I will be sharing The Austin Paradox, Miracle Man Book 2.

Miracle Man

MY REVIEW

The cover, those eyes, exciting, alluring, drawing me in, deeper and deeper…

WOW! My blood was boiling, my heart pounding, my palms sweating….well, you get the drift. Miracle Man is over the top fantabulous! Unputdownable!

OH NO. Here we go…

Isn’t there a government organization for everything?

The kid, 11 year old Bobby Austin…I hope the parents are suspicious about the Institute’s motivations, because I sure am!

As I write this review, I am watching Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon, and Robert James Austin makes me think of Sheldon. Intelligence off the charts and socially inept, in fact he becomes so engrossed in his work, he zones people out completely, drives himself past the brink of exhaustion. But is that all that’s going on?

I can see some badness coming his way. Nevertheless, I am loving this rollercoaster ride and you couldn’t pry the book out of my hands with a crowbar.

I believe our medical research leaves a lot to be desired and so does Robert. I believe Big Pharma is more interested in creating a treatment, than a cure. But, he is in the position to do something about it. Robert puts his life on the line for his beliefs. He is driven obsessed, he cannot stop until he finds the answer.

Joe, his mentor, is someone you have to meet for yourself. All I will say is…I love the man.

The writing is excellent and the story so intense, I keep forgetting Miracle Man is fiction. I want to put my arms around Robert and tell him it will be all right. Remember, he is only 11 years old, and I am watching him grow up.

I am trying real hard not to spoil anything, so I am scanning my notes for small nuggets that can convey how much I loved this story.

So thought provoking…So many questions come to mind…

Government conspiracies, Big Pharma, betrayal, inner demons, greed, entitlement, religion…

The characters…all are well developed and unique individuals in their own right. Some I loved and some I truly hated, detested, wanted to jump into the book and punch their lights out! I empathized with some, I wanted to bury some under the jail, but they are all pivotal to evoking emotions of sadness, rage, love, and hope, and have their place in the story.

I wondered how William R Liebowitz would wrap up Miracle Man. I had some ideas and he flirted with them, but took them even further than I envisioned. Way to go, William!

This is a must read for anyone that gives a damn about the world we live in! Let’s hope some genius reads this book and gets motivated.

The interview at the end left me feeling confused. What, if anything, can change the way business and research is done? I don’t have the answers, but I know something different needs to be done.

Thank goodness I have book II, The Austin Paradox. No waiting and I am beginning it now.

MY REVIEW

After I got over the brutal murder, I couldn’t help but laugh at Paul as he faces his day. He is definitely not a morning person and I can relate. Neither am I. I like that he wears sneakers with his suits. Makes sense to me. I laugh along with his police partners as they poke fun at him, like only true friends can do.

Nicole is just hanging out with her best friend, while the power is out due to a snowstorm, when her gift comes to light.

HE is pure evil. How does he choose his victims? I’ll leave that up to you to find out, but it is not what your run of the mill serial killer would he. He is brutal, savage. He is a real sicko.

Nicole’s ability is developing and she has no idea how intense it will get. She can feel the victim’s pain, live through their death. .I know she will get involved in the investigation and now I know how and why.

When Paul and Nicole meet, something zaps between them. Big surprise, right? (said sarcastically) I don’t mind knowing some of the story beforehand,, just as long as the author throws in a surprise or two. I love the scene where Nicole is getting dressed for their date. Simone is helping her and she does need the help. I love her BFF.

It’s easy to see how Carl, the reporter becomes involved. Investigating is not a nine to five, sit at your desk job. He goes out in the field. He wants to be a REAL reporter. He even dresses the part in a thrift store suit that makes me think of the film noir PI’s.

I love the dark, black as night thrillers and this qualifies. The murders are gruesome, grisly, overkill, mutilations beyond your imagination. Then…comes the autopsy description that takes it to another level of upchucking ugliness. The more grossness Perry Prete feeds me, the hungrier I get. BUT, I do like fun and smiles with my murder mysteries and he does supply that too, along with dialogue and easy banter between the characters.

Oh man, the hospital scene. Caught me by surprise, but Nicole is not afraid and I love it. NOW IT’S INTENSE…my thoughts run riot, I want to scream and yell, my heart beats a little faster, my eyes devour the words faster, the pace of the novel picks up, the suspense mounting.

The ending…..FANTASTIC.

Murder For Breakfast – Snatched by Alison Golden @alisonjgolden

Snatched (A Diana Hunter Mystery Book 2) - Alison Golden, Gabriella Zinnas

Here’s a glimpse of the Diana Hunter Mystery series. I fell in love with the covers.

Hunted Snatched Stolen Chopped Exposed

Snatched (Diana Hunter #2)

Amazon  /  Goodreads

MY REVIEW

The covers of the Diana Hunter Mystery series, blew me away and I knew I had to read Snatched by Alison Golden. This mystery novella was a quick and easy read.

Diana was a reporter and is now the editor for a crime magazine. It makes sense that she would know a lot about investigating and she gets the opportunity when a murder takes place right outside her balcony window.

She’s a bit snippy and snarky with the hunky Detective. And…we do have a friendly little critter, Max, who takes a liking to the Detective, so that’s a very good sign. Me thinks there may be some romance in the air.

The mystery is on the gruesome side and it does give me food for thought. Diana may present herself as a suspect by her actions, so that does keep the detective close…and closer. The writing caught my attention early. Even though the story is short, there is plenty of detail and action, whether danger or romance, to keep my interest throughout.

Underground Horror – Something Down There by Nancy Widrew #NancyWidrew

Something Down There - Nancy Widrew

MY REVIEW

Imagine climbing into a hole, slightly larger than you, into a chamber where you are hunched over and it  shrinks as you are forced to your hands and knees, eventually crawling on your belly. Well…I almost had to put the book down it was freaking me out. LOL

What nutbag would think finding people living in a caveway down under is a good thing? Well, Jeremy…IT’S NOT A GOOD THING!

Now, Karen and Jeremy are stuck underground with some weird people for their honeymoon. And if SHE thinks things can’t get any worse, think again. They are prisoners of the underground people.

One grotesque and otherworldly thing after another keeps the horror flowing through the pages. The tragic surprises are around every corner, but all is not lost. There is one ray of hope…

Eerie, frightening, tragic, so sad, yet hopeful. The world building and character development are right on target for a horror novel. There is a sense of impending doom hanging over their heads. I do wonder how this will end . Horrorlicious.

Can He Save Her – Escaping Memories by Amanda Siegrist @amanda_siegrist

Escaping Memories - Amanda Siegrist

The cover for Escaping Memories by Amanda Siegrist is simple, yet poignant.

I love that it says so much with so little and the author is the creator.

Cover by Amanda Siegrist

Escaping Memories (Lucky Town #1)

Amazon  /  Goodreads

MY REVIEW

In the small town of Lucky, a young child of ten has been murdered and Sheriff Logan Caldwell will not take a badly needed vacation until it has been handled. Then, it’s off to his cabin in the woods. His place of tranquility. He needed some peace and quiet, some solitude. He walks in, only to find he is not alone.

There is a woman and she needs his help. She has no memories, amnesia. She doesn’t know how or why is she here, she just knows danger is out there and she’s not going anywhere.

Even with the characters fear coming through, Amanda Siegrist writes with humor and lightness.

The immediate hook is great, the story line predictable…but who is the bad guy? At 24%, have I met him yet? I don’t think so, and I do have my eyes wide open. It’s a very small town and I would think he is no stranger to the area. He took her, used and abused her, but somehow she managed to escape. In the back of my mind, a thought persists, will he get his hands on her again?

I love strong women in distress. There is a sweet innocence about her. She has been hurt, terrorized, a childlike woman who needs a protector to help her find her way back to herself. Her naivety and honesty comes through in Amanda Siegrist’s storytelling. Even though their relationship develops quickly, she makes it seem as if it is natural, easy, real, well you know, sort of real.

A subtle menace lurks in the background.

Logan is the man I would want to run into if I were in her situation. He is chivalrous. I find the word perfectly describes him. He will not hurt her or take advantage of her. He is patient, gentle, tender, loving, putting her first in all things.

The peripheral characters have important roles to play and their well developed personalities shine through.

Even though I tend to favor darker and grittier novels, Amanda Siegrist made it easy to get lost in Escaping Memories, with suspense and humor that kept me turning the pages. I didn’t always know where we were going, and I like that she kept me guessing. The characters were easy to relate to and drew me into their lives, wanting to know if everyone makes it out of this mess in a good way…except for the bad guy, of course. He needs his comeuppance.

Do You Believe in Reincarnation – The Tempest Murders by P M Terrell @pmterrell

The Tempest Murders - P.M. Terrell

The Tempest Murders

Amazon  /  Audio  /  Goodreads

MY REVIEW

The girl of his dream walks into his life and turns his world upside down.

Sounds a bit cliche, but there is nothing cliche about P M Terrell’s ability to write a fantastic story in The Tempest Murders. She tweaks this suspense novel with touches of the paranormal…and maybe reincarnation?

Ryan had dreams of her ever since he could remember and now she walks into his life. He is more than haunted by his past. It’s as if he is reliving it.

I love his interaction with his sweet nieces and they love his cheesy rabbit dinner. It is touches like this that make her characters unforgettable. The twins immediately stole my heart. I could picture them in all their cuteness.

Man, oh man, this woman can write. There is a bigger mystery than mere murder and I eagerly anticipate her explanation. She is creeping me out, but the suspense and anticipation of what’s coming keeps me from putting the book down.

Category 5 Hurricane Irene is bearing down on them, but that is not the only storm brewing. Ryan struggles to keep the past from being repeated, but can he change Fate? What do you think?

I love the blend of serial killer, murder and mystery, with the paranormal and supernatural.

So Disappointed – A Clash of Kings by George R R Martin @GRRMspeaking

A Clash of Kings - George R.R. Martin

A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2)

Amazon  /  Audible  /  Goodreads

Wish I would not have waited so long to continue reading the series. So many characters I got confused. There is so much political machinations going on, that I have become bored with the brutal, crude, selfish and egotistical boy kings. Their emotions and impulses allow them to make mistakes that create some dangerous enemies that will come back to bite them. I am not sure if I like any of them and I’m not sure if they would survive anyway.

I checked this out from the library and I don’t know if I will continue the series or not.

Monday Mini – The Girl I Used To Be by Mary Torjussen @MaryTorjussen

The Girl I Used to Be - Mary Torjussen

First off, I would like to thank Yvonne at Socrates Book Reviews and Penguin Random House for the giveaway that sent this book to my shelf.

The Girl I Used To Be by Mary Torjussen is right up my alley. I love this simple cover that says so much.

MY REVIEW

Her life is filed with hope and promise, until…

An aura of menace is subtle but persistent, and I am wondering how far HE will go in her psychological torture.

I really don’t like Joe very much. I think he’s a bit lazy and selfish, though Anne needs to make her needs know. The longer you wait to solve a probe the less the other person understands why you feel the way you do. Communicate people! lol

Not sure what I was expecting, but the tangled web Mary Torjussen weaves makes it hard to put the book down. The damaged characters all have a special role to play and are pivotal to the story.

Twisted, mess with your mind, psychological thriller.

I won the book and voluntarily reviewed The Girl I Used To Be by Mary Torjussen.

Let’s find out.

The 12 Terrors of Christmas
by Claudette Melanson
Genre: Horror Short Stories

MY REVIEW

Claudette Melanson has been on my radar for some time now, but this will be my first reading of her work. And what a fabulous way to start. Overall, I give this short story anthology a rating of 4. Plenty of thrills and chills to whet your appetite and maybe think twice about what you want for Christmas. Do you believe in Santa?

Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos 4 Stars

Terror #1 – No one really believed in Santa, but Willa knew he was real. This look at how Santa came to be, how Christmas came to be, how he found his love and who he really is may shock you, yet explain his magic and immortality. Loved it and the fabulous twist on….  4 Stars

Terror #2 – Ya know that saying, no good deed goes unpunished? It applies here in a tragic tale of a boy taken and the young boy who steps up to save his life. 4 Stars

Terror #3 – As I read of Amy’s ability to see into the future and talk to ghosts, I wonder if I would want to know, especially if all I could do is wait for it to happen… waiting with no hope. 4 Stars

Terror #4 – Love Krampus, who is not what he appears to  be, as is Lamia, a four year old girl that works her Christmas magic, as Vaughn can attest to. 4 Stars

Terror #5 – Will…vampires and were of the Christmas kind abound in this sometimes vicious tale of the paranormal and magical world of Santa, reindeer and elves. 4 Stars

Terror #6 – A vampire is a vampire and a cookie could be his downfall, if he tries to make a bargain best left undone. 4 Stars

Terror #7 – This Christmas poem is filled with zombies, weres, demons, and  Santa unlike the Santa you know. 4 Stars

Terror #8 – Would the sea witch bring down Santa and the North pole? She fooled me good! 4 Stars

Terror #9 – She may work for Scrooge, but her boyfriend wants to give her the ultimate gift. I saw the grisly coming. 3 Stars

Terror #10 – Elves, dwarfs, zombies, even a zombie shark. LOVE IT. 4 Stars

Terror #11 – I have not read Riptide YET, but I enjoyed this look into the family’s holiday celebration. 3 Stars

Terror #12 – Lynn Lamb’s contribution. Want to know how Santa can make it around the world in one night? What would happen if he lost his mind? Can Cinnamon Styx and the children save Christmas? Loved it. 4 Stars

Horror Giveaway – Jurassic Florida by Hunter Shea @huntershea1 @SDSXXTours

Jurassic, Florida - Hunter Shea

I love dinosaurs and horror, so I am super excited to be a part of the Jurassic Florida tour.

Jurassic Florida
One Size Eats All #1
by Hunter Shea
Genre: Horror

MY REVIEW

Woo Hoo, another creature feature, Jurassic Florida by Hunter Shea. I love his horror stories and to see that fabulous cover and know there’s gonna be some munching going on makes me eager to begin.

Humans:  They’re what’s for dinner.

And it’s all you can eat...

With a start like that, I don’t think Hunter Shea can go wrong. If you could see me now, all you would see is my teeth, because my smile is so wide….

So…let’s travel to sunny Florida, my neck of the woods. I see a lot of lizards hanging around, but nothing like these blood thirst buggers. There are lizards galore, but, more than that, is the hurricane heading their way.

Sinkholes, everyone in Florida know what sinkholes are, but these are something else entirely.

It’s hard to write a review without giving things away, so I’ll just say this….

Hunter Shea can sure spin a wicked tale. In Jurassic Florida, he starts out slow, feeding me a little at a time…Until the storm hits and all hell breaks loose.

I must warn you not to get attached to any of the characters. It’s hard to say who or how many will survive, because Hunter Shea is not afraid to kill them off in a savage and brutal way. I must be sick because I can’t help but laugh as I picture the events unfold like a movie in my mind.  I love all the blood curdling gnoshing going on and revel in their misery.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of Jurassic Florida by Hunter Shea.
